Department of Paediatric Surgery
The department of pediatric surgery at Ramaiah Medical college Hospital offers state of the art care, not only in general pediatric surgery but also in the field of neonatal surgery, pediatric urology, thoracic surgery, gastro intestinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy until the age of 18 years. The pediatric surgical patient requires tender care with delicate skills and diligent follow up as the new born baby; toddler grows through adolescence into a mature adult.
As pediatric surgeons we learn resilience from the children and are grateful for the opportunity to serve them.
The surgical team is led by senior and experienced consultants who have been trained in leading hospitals in India and overseas. The service is supported by the some of the finest Pediatricians, Neonatologists, Pediatric intensivists, Pediatric oncologists, Anesthetists and Nursing staff.
Paediatric Surgery department carries out surgical procedures for complex new born anomalies, minimally invasive surgeries for new borns as well as paediatric cases. The department handles emergency cases like paediatric trauma, acute abdomen, foreign body aspiration etc. The department displays fairly good outcome in treating paediatric malignancies and vascular access in collaboration with paediatric oncology team.
The department of Paediatric Surgery was established in the year 1993 by Dr. Goutham Ganguly along with Dr. Ashok Rizwani who served the department till the year 2007. Short service was rendered by Dr. Indira Sunil (2000 to 2003). Dr. Manjiri Somashekhar (2003 to 2021) and Dr. Padmalatha S Kadamba (Joined in 2005 to till date), Other faculties who joined the department with significant contribution towards the departmental work between .

The Paediatric Surgery team has improved the department in terms of four fold increase in the surgical work, established innovative surgical practices , encouraged minimal invasive surgeries and started M.Ch training course in the year 2011. They have conducted several CME’s and state level paediatric surgical conferences in the department; attended various national and international paediatric surgery conferences and won prizes at various meetings. They have taken keen interest in training the M.Ch students and also encouraged their practices in post M.Ch period. This facilitated the department in obtaining an increase of seats in M.Ch Paediatric surgery from 1 to 3 in the year 2020.
In order to provide top notch Paediatric Surgery services the department has got an excellent infrastructure in the form of exclusive laminar operation theatres and designated days of the week for operating paediatric cases, well supported by paediatric anaesthetist team, adequate equipments for carrying out minimal invasive paediatric surgery cases, supportive care by faculty and nursing staff in neonatal and paediatric ICU, exclusive department library, well planned seminar halls with the modern audio visual aids, designated outpatient department with attached dressing room
